Dilemma
Is reality fundamentally digital?
Pancomputationalism, Planck-scale quanta, simulation theory and Kabbalistic letter-mysticism all say yes — but for very different reasons. The rest of the atlas says no.
Context
The question of whether reality is at bottom discrete (bits, quanta, atoms, divine letters) or continuous (fields, the One, the unbroken flow of dependent arising) is older than computation but has been sharpened by it. Wolfram's computational universe, digital physics, the simulation hypothesis, and Dataism all give modern naturalist form to an old intuition: the world is, at its base, discrete units in lawful interaction. Kabbalistic letter-mysticism, Buddhist momentariness, and certain readings of atomistic theism give it a theistic form. Continuous views, by contrast, run from classical physics to the Tao that knows no joints to the One's unbroken self-disclosure.
Why it matters
Whether reality is fundamentally digital shapes the interpretation of physics, the plausibility of strong simulation hypotheses, the metaphysics of information, and a tradition's posture toward computational accounts of mind, world, and divine action. It also bears on what kind of conservation laws are deepest — bit-counts and discrete invariants or continuous-symmetry Noether-style conservation.
The coordinates that split the schools
The stances
Yes — bits, quanta, computational substrate.
18 schoolsOn this view, the world is at bottom discrete and law-governed, with no metaphysical agency above or behind the substrate. Reality reduces to bits or their physical analogues; the continuous appearance of fields and flows is coarse-graining over discrete underlying structure.

- 1% Yes — naturalist quanta of experience. on Are there indivisible units of experience?
- 1% Stored — discrete engrams, traces, weights. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% Prayer changes the pray-er, not the prayed-for. on Can prayer for someone far away affect them?
- 1% Coincidence is exactly what the math says it is. The pattern is in the noticer. on Are coincidences ever more than coincidence?
- 1% Truth is mind-independent, universal, accessible in principle to all. on Is truth universal, tradition-bound, situated, or constructed?
Yes — but divinely-discrete: divine letters, momentary cognitions, atomistic theism.
12 schoolsOn this view, the world is at bottom discrete, but the units are not bare bits. They are divine names, momentary cognitions, karmic atoms, sacred letters — the elementary acts of a creating or ordering agency. Discreteness is real and fundamental, and so is the agency that stands behind it.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% Yes, theistic atomism — actual occasions, divine letters, momentary cognitions. on Are there indivisible units of experience?
- 1% Stored — in divine memory's discrete particulars, or in karmic-record units. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% A soul continues into another mode of being. on What happens to "you" when you die?
- 1% The future is open and you are a genuine origin of it. on Do you really choose?
- 1% The addict could have chosen otherwise — that's why recovery is real. on Are addicts responsible for their addiction?
No — continuous fields, classical limits, analog deep structure.
36 schoolsOn this view, the world is at bottom continuous — fields, flows, distributions — and there is no metaphysical agency behind the continuity. Apparent discreteness (atoms, quanta) is a feature of how the continuous substrate presents at certain scales, not a sign of an underlying bit-structure.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% No — continuous Jamesian stream, phenomenological lived time. on Are there indivisible units of experience?
- 1% Reconstructed — continuous re-narrating, no fixed engrams. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% Prayer changes the pray-er, not the prayed-for. on Can prayer for someone far away affect them?
- 1% Coincidence is exactly what the math says it is. The pattern is in the noticer. on Are coincidences ever more than coincidence?
- 1% Damage is real and permanent on the relevant timescales. There is no recovery; there is only limitation. on Is environmental damage ever truly permanent?
No — continuous divine sustaining act, the Tao that knows no joints, the One's self-disclosure.
64 schoolsOn this view, the world is at bottom continuous and the continuity is itself sustained by agency. The divine sustaining act is unbroken; the Tao does not chop the world into bits; the One discloses itself as a single continuous presence. Discreteness is a feature of the appearance, real at its level but not deepest.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% No — continuous divine presence; consciousness is the unbroken witness. on Are there indivisible units of experience?
- 1% Held in continuous divine or ancestral remembering — neither stored discretely nor purely reconstructed. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% Truth is mind-independent, universal, accessible in principle to all. on Is truth universal, tradition-bound, situated, or constructed?
- 1% Information is conserved — the personal pattern is held even when an individual mind loses it. on Is anything truly lost when someone forgets?
- 1% Information at the cosmic level isn't destroyed; deletion only obscures access. on Does deleting your data online destroy something real?
Schools the coordinates don't place
These schools don't satisfy any stance's coordinate pattern strongly enough to be assigned — either because they decline to commit on the question (Confucianism is famously silent on what comes after; Pyrrhonian and pragmatist traditions suspend judgment), or because their attribute signature crosses categories in a way the five buckets don't capture.
