Dilemma

Is reality fundamentally digital?

Pancomputationalism, Planck-scale quanta, simulation theory and Kabbalistic letter-mysticism all say yes — but for very different reasons. The rest of the atlas says no.

Context

The question of whether reality is at bottom discrete (bits, quanta, atoms, divine letters) or continuous (fields, the One, the unbroken flow of dependent arising) is older than computation but has been sharpened by it. Wolfram's computational universe, digital physics, the simulation hypothesis, and Dataism all give modern naturalist form to an old intuition: the world is, at its base, discrete units in lawful interaction. Kabbalistic letter-mysticism, Buddhist momentariness, and certain readings of atomistic theism give it a theistic form. Continuous views, by contrast, run from classical physics to the Tao that knows no joints to the One's unbroken self-disclosure.

Why it matters

Whether reality is fundamentally digital shapes the interpretation of physics, the plausibility of strong simulation hypotheses, the metaphysics of information, and a tradition's posture toward computational accounts of mind, world, and divine action. It also bears on what kind of conservation laws are deepest — bit-counts and discrete invariants or continuous-symmetry Noether-style conservation.

The stances

Yes — bits, quanta, computational substrate.

27 schools

On this view, the world is at bottom discrete and law-governed, with no metaphysical agency above or behind the substrate. Reality reduces to bits or their physical analogues; the continuous appearance of fields and flows is coarse-graining over discrete underlying structure.

Why these schools land hereinfo_granularity=Discrete + obs_metaphysical_agency=None gathers Dataism, Transhumanism, Simulation Theory, Gamer, Quantum Realism, Multiverse Theory, and other naturalist-computational schools. They share a pancomputationalist or quantum-discretist intuition: the deepest structure of the world is countable, and continuity is a useful approximation.

Yes — but divinely-discrete: divine letters, momentary cognitions, atomistic theism.

14 schools

On this view, the world is at bottom discrete, but the units are not bare bits. They are divine names, momentary cognitions, karmic atoms, sacred letters — the elementary acts of a creating or ordering agency. Discreteness is real and fundamental, and so is the agency that stands behind it.

Why these schools land hereinfo_granularity=Discrete + obs_metaphysical_agency in [Personal, Cosmic-ordering, Spirit-relational] gathers the atomistic-theistic cluster: Kabbalah's letter-mysticism, Jainism's discrete karmic ontology, certain tantric readings, Process Theology's actual occasions, and ATR/Animist traditions whose spirit-relational ontology counts in discrete encounters. The cluster reads the elementary units as agent-laden rather than as bare computational atoms.

No — continuous fields, classical limits, analog deep structure.

75 schools

On this view, the world is at bottom continuous — fields, flows, distributions — and there is no metaphysical agency behind the continuity. Apparent discreteness (atoms, quanta) is a feature of how the continuous substrate presents at certain scales, not a sign of an underlying bit-structure.

Why these schools land hereinfo_granularity=Continuous + obs_metaphysical_agency=None gathers the naturalist-continuous cluster: Naturalism, Realism, Materialism, Determinism, Empiricism, Critical Realism, OOO, Hylomorphism, Analytic Metaphysics, Dialectical Materialism, Pragmatism, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Constructivism, Postmodernism, Logical Positivism, and the various secular and naturalist-leaning schools. They share a preference for continuous deep structure and a refusal of agential framing.

No — continuous divine sustaining act, the Tao that knows no joints, the One's self-disclosure.

92 schools

On this view, the world is at bottom continuous and the continuity is itself sustained by agency. The divine sustaining act is unbroken; the Tao does not chop the world into bits; the One discloses itself as a single continuous presence. Discreteness is a feature of the appearance, real at its level but not deepest.

Why these schools land hereinfo_granularity=Continuous + obs_metaphysical_agency in [Personal, Cosmic-ordering, Spirit-relational] gathers the largest single stance in this partition: Abrahamic traditions (Catholic, Reformed, Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox, LDS, Islamic, Jewish, Bahá'í) on the Personal side; Taoism, Confucianism, Stoicism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sufism, Sikhism, Hermeticism, Neo-Platonism, Advaita on the Cosmic-ordering side; Animism, ATR/Yoruba-Ifá, Ubuntu, Shintoism, Deep Ecology on the Spirit-relational side. The cluster's shared structure is continuous-substrate-plus-agency.
