Ambigua to John (Ambigua ad Iohannem)
St. Maximus the Confessor's c. 628-30 foundational synthesis of Christian Neoplatonism
Tradition: Late Byzantine patristic theology
Maximus the Confessor's c. 628-30 foundational synthesis — the major patristic theological synthesis
The Ambigua ad Iohannem (Ambigua to John) is St. Maximus the Confessor's c. 628-30 collection of 71 theological-philosophical "difficulties" — central themes: the cosmic Christ as the union of God and creation through the natural movement of all things back to their divine origin (logoi-Logos); the universal scope of Christ's reconciliation through the human-divine dyothelite Christology; and the major synthesis of Cappadocian, Dionysian, and Origenian traditions. Maximus suffered amputation of his right hand and tongue and was exiled for this Christology, dying en route.
