Berdyaev's 1937 'Origin of Russian Communism' — Russian communism as continuation of Russian religious-messianic tradition
Published in English in 1937 (the Russian original 'Istoki i smysl russkogo kommunizma' appeared posthumously in 1955), 'The Origin of Russian Communism' is Berdyaev's classic study of the intellectual-spiritual roots of Russian Bolshevism. Against Western readings that treat Russian communism as imported Marxism, Berdyaev argues that it is a continuation of the Russian religious-messianic tradition — secularised Slavophilism, the legacy of the schism, the populist Narodniki — that gives Russian communism its peculiar form.
