Freud's 1920 introduction of the death drive (Todestrieb)
Beyond the Pleasure Principle (Jenseits des Lustprinzips) is Freud's 1920 introduction of a major revision to psychoanalytic theory: the postulation of the death drive (Todestrieb) alongside Eros — the inherent tendency of all living things to return to the inorganic state. The work reflects Freud's post-WWI engagement with the repetition compulsion (especially in trauma) and his growing pessimism about the human prospect.
