The Logic of Practice
Bourdieu's 1980 synthesis of habitus, field, and capital
Tradition: Late-twentieth-century French sociology / theory of practice
Bourdieu's 1980 synthesis of his theory of practice — habitus, field, and capital
The Logic of Practice (Le sens pratique) is Pierre Bourdieu's 1980 synthesis of his theory of practice, drawing on his ethnographic work among the Kabyle of Algeria and his sociological studies of French society. Bourdieu articulates his triadic conceptual scheme: habitus (the embodied, durable dispositions through which the social world is internalized as a second nature); field (the structured space of relational positions in which actors compete for stakes); capital (economic, cultural, social, symbolic — the resources unevenly distributed across fields). Foundational for late-twentieth-century sociology, cultural studies, and the modern theory of practice.
