Bergson's 1907 vitalist philosophy of evolution — the élan vital
Creative Evolution (L'évolution créatrice) is Bergson's 1907 vitalist philosophy of evolution — central thesis: biological evolution is the creative unfolding of an élan vital (vital impulse) that genuinely produces novelty; the mechanistic and teleological accounts are both inadequate; intelligence is adapted to dead matter but intuition can grasp life from within. The work won Bergson the 1927 Nobel Prize in Literature and shaped early 20th-c. philosophy, theology, and literature.
