Vital's 'Sha'ar ha-Gilgulim' — Lurianic doctrine of soul-transmigration (gilgul neshamot)
Part of Hayyim Vital's systematic record of Luria's teachings (one of the so-called 'Eight Gates' compiled from Vital's manuscripts), 'Sha'ar ha-Gilgulim' (Gate of Reincarnations) is the principal exposition of the Lurianic doctrine of gilgul neshamot (soul-transmigration). Within the broader Lurianic system of tzimtzum / shevirah / tikkun, individual souls reincarnate to complete the cosmic-eschatological work of tikkun olam; each soul's specific tikkun (rectification) is its life-task, often spanning multiple lifetimes. The work is the major Jewish-mystical treatment of reincarnation.
