Tradition: Late-nineteenth-century empiriocriticism / Viennese positivism
Mach's 1886 founding work of empiriocriticism — sensations as the fundamental elements
The Analysis of Sensations and the Relation of the Physical to the Psychical (Die Analyse der Empfindungen) is Ernst Mach's 1886 founding work of empiriocriticism. Mach argues that "sensations" (Empfindungen) are the fundamental elements out of which both physical and psychical worlds are constructed — anticipating Russell's neutral monism. Foundational for late-nineteenth-century empiriocriticism, the Vienna Circle's logical positivism, twentieth-century neutral monism, and Einstein's critical engagement with absolute space.
