Tradition: Mid-twentieth-century British object-relations psychoanalysis
Klein's 1957 mature statement of object-relations psychoanalysis — envy, gratitude, and the depressive position
Envy and Gratitude (and Other Works 1946-63) is Melanie Klein's 1957 mature statement of her object-relations psychoanalysis. The Austrian-Hungarian Jewish émigré, who shaped British psychoanalysis from 1926, articulates: the paranoid-schizoid position (split good/bad objects); the depressive position (recognition of the whole object and the capacity for reparation); envy as a primary destructive force in the infant's relation to the good breast; gratitude as its developmental counterpart. Foundational for the British Independent and Kleinian schools, object-relations theory (Winnicott, Bion, Mitchell), and the modern psychoanalytic clinic.
