Anti-Duhring
Engels's 1878 polemic against Eugen Dühring — popular introduction to dialectical materialism (Anti-Dühring)
Tradition: Late-nineteenth-century Marxism
Engels's 1878 popular exposition of dialectical materialism — Marxist response to Dühring
Anti-Dühring (Herrn Eugen Dührings Umwälzung der Wissenschaft, "Mr Eugen Dühring's Revolution in Science") is Friedrich Engels's 1877-78 polemic against the German socialist Eugen Dühring, serialised in the Vorwärts and published as a book in 1878. Through systematic critique of Dühring, Engels develops a popular exposition of Marxist philosophy, political economy, and socialism — particularly the philosophical doctrine of dialectical materialism. A condensed three-chapter version (Socialism: Utopian and Scientific) became the most widely-read Marxist text of the late nineteenth century. Foundational for the systematic articulation of dialectical materialism and orthodox Marxism.
