Iqbal's 1908 Cambridge dissertation — survey of Persian Islamic philosophy from Zoroaster to the Bahai movement
Iqbal's 1907-08 doctoral dissertation at the University of Munich (after Cambridge), 'The Development of Metaphysics in Persia: A Contribution to the History of Muslim Philosophy' (published Luzac, London, 1908) surveys Persian Islamic philosophy from pre-Islamic Zoroastrianism, through Avicennan falsafa, the Illuminationist school (Suhrawardi), Mulla Sadra's Transcendent Philosophy, the Shi'i mystical tradition, the Sufi schools, the Babi and Bahai movements. The book is Iqbal's first systematic philosophical work and a foundational source for the modern Anglophone reception of Persian Islamic philosophy.
