Vygotsky's 1934 posthumous founding work of socio-cultural psychology — language as mediating tool
Thought and Language (Мышление и речь, Myshlenie i rech') is Lev Vygotsky's 1934 posthumous founding work of socio-cultural psychology, published months after his death from tuberculosis at age 37. Vygotsky develops a cultural-historical psychology in which higher mental functions are mediated by cultural-symbolic tools — preeminently language. Central concepts: the zone of proximal development; inner speech; the social-genetic origin of higher mental functions; the dialectical interplay of thought and language. Foundational for socio-cultural psychology, the modern theory of education, and (alongside Piaget) the developmental tradition.
