Seven Valleys and Four Valleys
Bahá'u'lláh's c. 1856-58 short mystical works — Seven Valleys (Haft Vadi) on the mystic's journey through Search, Love, Knowledge, Unity, Contentment, Wonderment, True Poverty; Four Valleys (Chahar Vadi) on parallel paths for the four kinds of seekers
Tradition: Bahá'í Faith / Sufi mystical tradition
The mystical seeker passes through seven valleys to attain the presence of the Beloved
Two short mystical works composed by Bahá'u'lláh in the Baghdad period in response to questions from Sufi correspondents. Seven Valleys (for Shaykh Muhyiddin, judge of Khaniqin) describes the mystic's journey through seven stages: Search, Love, Knowledge, Unity, Contentment, Wonderment, and True Poverty/Absolute Nothingness. Four Valleys (for Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman of Karkuk) treats the parallel paths corresponding to the four kinds of seekers. Together — Bahá'u'lláh's most extensive engagement with the Persian Sufi tradition (especially 'Attar's Conference of the Birds) and the principal mystical-poetic texts in the Bahá'í canon.
