Ibn Khaldūn's 1377 foundational work of historiography and social science — ʿaṣabiyya as the engine of history
The Muqaddimah ("Prolegomenon") is Ibn Khaldūn's 1377 foundational work of historiography and proto-social-science — the introduction to his universal history Kitāb al-ʿIbar. Central thesis: history is a science with its own laws; "ʿaṣabiyya" (group solidarity) is the key engine of historical-political change, especially in the cyclical rise and fall of dynasties between nomadic-bedouin solidarity and settled-urban civilization. The work is foundational for modern philosophy of history and social science.
