The Quadruple Object
Harman's 2011 mature articulation of object-oriented ontology
Tradition: Early-twenty-first-century object-oriented ontology
Harman's 2011 mature articulation of object-oriented ontology — the fourfold structure of every object
The Quadruple Object is Graham Harman's 2011 mature articulation of object-oriented ontology (OOO), building on his earlier Tool-Being (2002) and Heidegger Explained (2007). Harman develops a four-fold structure for every object: real object (RO), sensual object (SO), real qualities (RQ), sensual qualities (SQ) — with ten possible tensions between these poles structuring objects' relations. Foundational for the OOO movement (Bryant, Bogost, Morton) and contemporary speculative realism.
