On the Infinite Universe and Worlds (De l'Infinito Universo e Mondi)
Giordano Bruno's 1584 foundational text of pluralist cosmology — for which he was burned in 1600
Tradition: Italian Renaissance Neoplatonist hermeticism
Bruno's 1584 foundational pluralist cosmology — burned at the stake in Rome in 1600
On the Infinite Universe and Worlds (De l'Infinito Universo e Mondi) is Giordano Bruno's 1584 dialogue — central thesis: the universe is infinite, containing an infinity of worlds and suns; the Earth is not central; God is immanent in the infinite cosmos rather than transcending it. Combined with Bruno's explicit pantheist-hermetic theology, this got him arrested in 1592 and burned at the stake in Rome in 1600. The work is the foundational text of post-Copernican pluralist cosmology.
