Ferrante's 2011 first Neapolitan novel — childhood friendship in postwar Naples
My Brilliant Friend (L'amica geniale) is the 2011 first volume of Elena Ferrante's four-volume Neapolitan Novels (2011-14, completing with The Story of the Lost Child). Lila and Elena ("Lenù") grow up in a poor neighborhood of postwar Naples — two ferociously intelligent young women whose friendship structures the cycle's four volumes through five decades. Narrated retrospectively by Elena after Lila's mysterious disappearance, the novel traces friendship, ambition, class, gender, and the violent texture of Neapolitan life. Foundational for twenty-first-century Italian literature; Ferrante's identity remains anonymous.
