Hooke's 1678 'ut tensio sic vis' — the announcement of Hooke's Law of elastic deformation
Published in 1678 as 'Lectures de Potentia Restitutiva, or of Spring, Explaining the Power of Springing Bodies', this Cutlerian-Lecture treatise contains Hooke's classic statement of the law of elastic deformation — 'Ut tensio sic vis' ('as the extension, so the force'). Hooke had encoded the discovery as the anagram 'ceiiinosssttuv' in 1676; the 1678 publication reveals the solution. The book also offers Hooke's mechanical explanations of springiness in air, watch-springs, and various elastic media.
