Dilemma
Are there indivisible units of experience?
Whiteheadian actual occasions, Buddhist moments of mind, Kabbalistic letter-cognitions, IIT phi-units — or the unbroken Jamesian stream? The atomism of experience cuts across naturalism and theism alike.
Context
Whether experience comes in discrete pulses or as a continuous flow is an old question in the philosophy of mind and a live one in contemporary consciousness studies. Whiteheadian process metaphysics, Buddhist Abhidharma, integrated information theory, and Kabbalistic mysticism each propose a kind of atomism of experience, though with very different atoms. Jamesian stream-of-consciousness, phenomenology, and theological doctrines of divine presence emphasise continuity instead.
Why it matters
Whether experience is discrete or continuous shapes theories of consciousness (IIT, global workspace, phenomenological time-consciousness), contemplative practice (do I attend to a moment, or to a flow?), and the metaphysics of personal identity (is the self a series of pulses or an unbroken witness?).
The coordinates that split the schools
The stances
Yes — naturalist quanta of experience.
18 schoolsOn this view, experience comes in discrete units defined by the substrate: information-theoretic phi-units, computational frames, discrete neural events. There is no further metaphysical agency that knits them; the appearance of a stream is the way many discrete events present to introspection.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% Yes — bits, quanta, computational substrate. on Is reality fundamentally digital?
- 1% Stored — discrete engrams, traces, weights. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% Prayer changes the pray-er, not the prayed-for. on Can prayer for someone far away affect them?
- 1% Coincidence is exactly what the math says it is. The pattern is in the noticer. on Are coincidences ever more than coincidence?
- 1% Truth is mind-independent, universal, accessible in principle to all. on Is truth universal, tradition-bound, situated, or constructed?
Yes, theistic atomism — actual occasions, divine letters, momentary cognitions.
12 schoolsOn this view, the atoms of experience are not bare quanta but agent-laden moments: Whiteheadian actual occasions in which subjectivity and the divine lure meet, Kabbalistic letter-cognitions in which divine names act, Buddhist Abhidharma moments of mind, tantric ksana. The discreteness is real and so is the agency that informs each unit.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% Yes — but divinely-discrete: divine letters, momentary cognitions, atomistic theism. on Is reality fundamentally digital?
- 1% Stored — in divine memory's discrete particulars, or in karmic-record units. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% A soul continues into another mode of being. on What happens to "you" when you die?
- 1% The future is open and you are a genuine origin of it. on Do you really choose?
- 1% The addict could have chosen otherwise — that's why recovery is real. on Are addicts responsible for their addiction?
No — continuous Jamesian stream, phenomenological lived time.
36 schoolsOn this view, experience is continuous: James's stream, Husserlian time-consciousness, the lived flow that any introspection takes itself to find. There is no agential framing and no atomistic substrate; experience is a continuum and that is the deepest fact about it.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% No — continuous fields, classical limits, analog deep structure. on Is reality fundamentally digital?
- 1% Reconstructed — continuous re-narrating, no fixed engrams. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% Prayer changes the pray-er, not the prayed-for. on Can prayer for someone far away affect them?
- 1% Coincidence is exactly what the math says it is. The pattern is in the noticer. on Are coincidences ever more than coincidence?
- 1% Damage is real and permanent on the relevant timescales. There is no recovery; there is only limitation. on Is environmental damage ever truly permanent?
No — continuous divine presence; consciousness is the unbroken witness.
64 schoolsOn this view, experience is continuous and the continuity is held by something more than substrate: the divine presence in the soul, the Tao that runs through, the Ātman-Brahman witness, the unbroken self-disclosure of the One. Atomistic accounts of experience cut across what the view holds to be most basic.
Where this stance leads ⓘ
- 1% No — continuous divine sustaining act, the Tao that knows no joints, the One's self-disclosure. on Is reality fundamentally digital?
- 1% Held in continuous divine or ancestral remembering — neither stored discretely nor purely reconstructed. on Is memory stored or reconstructed?
- 1% Truth is mind-independent, universal, accessible in principle to all. on Is truth universal, tradition-bound, situated, or constructed?
- 1% Information is conserved — the personal pattern is held even when an individual mind loses it. on Is anything truly lost when someone forgets?
- 1% Information at the cosmic level isn't destroyed; deletion only obscures access. on Does deleting your data online destroy something real?
Schools the coordinates don't place
These schools don't satisfy any stance's coordinate pattern strongly enough to be assigned — either because they decline to commit on the question (Confucianism is famously silent on what comes after; Pyrrhonian and pragmatist traditions suspend judgment), or because their attribute signature crosses categories in a way the five buckets don't capture.
