The Order of Time (L'ordine del tempo) is Carlo Rovelli's 2017 popular philosophical-physical essay on the nature of time. Rovelli — a leading theorist of loop quantum gravity — argues in twelve short chapters that time as we ordinarily experience it (a uniform universal flowing present) dissolves as we probe deeper into physics: time has no preferred direction (the asymmetry comes from entropy); no single now (relativity); no fundamental status (loop quantum gravity dispenses with the time variable); the experience of time arises from our perspectival, thermodynamic, memorial relation to the world. Is the universe running out of usable energy?
The heat death of the universe — entropy maxed out, no further work possible — is among the more sobering implications of mainstream physics. Whether it is structurally inescapable depends on what kind of finitude the cosmos has.
Both time and matter are unbounded; 'running out' is misframed.
