Rovelli's 2017 popular essay on the dissolution of time in fundamental physics
The Order of Time (L'ordine del tempo) is Carlo Rovelli's 2017 popular philosophical-physical essay on the nature of time. Rovelli — a leading theorist of loop quantum gravity — argues in twelve short chapters that time as we ordinarily experience it (a uniform universal flowing present) dissolves as we probe deeper into physics: time has no preferred direction (the asymmetry comes from entropy); no single now (relativity); no fundamental status (loop quantum gravity dispenses with the time variable); the experience of time arises from our perspectival, thermodynamic, memorial relation to the world. Foundational for the contemporary philosophy of time and the science of time.
