Scivias is Hildegard of Bingen's first major work of visionary theology and the founding text of her career as a Christian visionary, composer, theologian, and natural-scientific writer. Composed in the decade following her 1141 call (Hildegard reports a fiery illumination commanding her to write what she saw), the book presents twenty-six visions organised into three books: the work of creation, the work of redemption, the history of salvation. Each vision is described in detail (Hildegard's illustrators produced the famous Rupertsberg illuminations) and then theologically interpreted under Hildegard's own commentary. The work was formally endorsed by Pope Eugene III at the Synod of Trier (1147-48), giving Hildegard institutional recognition as a legitimate visionary. The theological framework integrates orthodox Christian doctrine with Hildegard's distinctive viriditas (the "greening power" of the divine creative force), her natural-philosophical vision of the cosmos, and her characteristic visual-symbolic theology. Scivias shaped subsequent medieval German mystical tradition and has been continuously rediscovered in modern Hildegard scholarship.
