Tradition: German contemporary cultural philosophy
Sloterdijk's 1983 foundational text on cynicism as the dominant mode of modern consciousness
Critique of Cynical Reason (Kritik der zynischen Vernunft) is Peter Sloterdijk's 1983 foundational text — central thesis: modern enlightened consciousness has degenerated into "cynical reason" — knowing the truth about ideology and acting against it; against this Sloterdijk recovers the ancient "kynism" of Diogenes (laughter, the body, public provocation). The work was the bestselling German philosophy book of the 20th century and re-launched popular philosophy in German.
