Brentano's 1874 foundational text — introducing intentionality as the mark of the mental
Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint (Psychologie vom empirischen Standpunkt) is Franz Brentano's 1874 foundational text — central thesis: the "intentionality" (Intentionalität or Gerichtetheit) of mental phenomena — their being directed towards an object — is the distinguishing mark of the mental; psychology as empirical-philosophical investigation of intentional acts. The work was foundational for the Brentanian school (Husserl, Meinong, Twardowski, Stumpf) and through it for the entire phenomenological tradition.
