Marguerite Porete's c. 1295 foundational mystical work — her execution for heresy in 1310
Tradition: Beguine mysticism / Free Spirit
Marguerite Porete's c. 1295 mystical work — for which she was burned for heresy in 1310
The Mirror of Simple Souls (Le Mirouer des Simples Âmes) is Marguerite Porete's c. 1295 mystical dialogue between Love, Reason, and the Soul — central thesis: the "annihilated soul" (l'âme adneantie) is so united with Divine Love that it has no will of its own, transcending even the virtues and the Church. The work was condemned in 1306 and Porete burned at the stake in Paris in 1310 — making her a major martyr figure for medieval women's mystical tradition. Recovered in the 20th century as a major mystical-philosophical text.
