Chalmers's "Reality+" is the founding systematic philosophical statement of virtual realism: the position that virtual objects and experiences are genuinely real, that the simulation hypothesis is a coherent metaphysical option, and that living in a simulation would not in itself be living a less valuable life. The book combines popular and technical chapters: a virtual cat is a real cat in the relevant sense (it is a structured pattern in a computational substrate, no less real than a biological cat is a structured pattern in a biochemical substrate); the simulation argument (Bostrom) is taken seriously without collapsing into skepticism; and the philosophical questions traditionally posed by the brain-in-a-vat scenario are reframed for an era in which we are actually building immersive virtual environments. Chalmers's broader panpsychist programme (developed since the Conscious Mind, 1996) is continuous with the virtual-realist framework: consciousness in a simulated substrate is real consciousness.

Virtual realism is presented as a naturalistic extension of standard scientific realism — virtual worlds run on physical substrates and are explicable by the same kind of natural inquiry.

Internal Tensions
Virtual-realism's claim that simulated experiences are "real" is contested from both common-sense and traditional-philosophical sides. Critics argue that the reality of the substrate is one thing and the reality of the simulated content another. Chalmers's response — that what matters is structural-functional realization, not substrate provenance — is a non-trivial philosophical commitment that the book defends across hundreds of pages but doesn't close the debate.
