The 1844 Manuscripts (also called the Paris Manuscripts) are the young Marx's philosophical notebooks from his Paris exile — three unfinished manuscripts containing the most philosophical statement of Marxist humanism. The famous "estranged labour" section analyses alienation under capitalism in four dimensions: workers are alienated from their products (which face them as alien objects), from their productive activity (work is no longer life-affirming), from their species-being (distinctively human creative capacity), and from each other (relations between persons become relations between things). Discovered and published in 1932, the Manuscripts launched a "young Marx" reading that has been central to twentieth-century Marxist humanism — though Althusserian structuralists argue the mature Marx of Capital represents a sharp break from this philosophical-humanist phase.
