Sun Ra's 1969 album — electronic-Moog experiments and Afrofuturist mythology in cosmic-jazz form
Atlantis (recorded 1967-69; released on Sun Ra's Saturn label, 1969) is a major Sun Ra Arkestra album of his late-1960s cosmic-jazz period. The title-track is a 22-minute Moog-synthesizer-led performance combining electronic textures, free-jazz Arkestra playing, and chanted-vocal cosmic-mythology references to the lost continent of Atlantis. Major Afrofuturist musical-philosophical text — though Sun Ra's practice often resisted being categorised under any single descriptive term.

School Embodiments
Foundational text of Afrofuturism — though the term post-dates Sun Ra's practice.
"The lost continent of Atlantis — the cosmic-mythological framework that Sun Ra developed across decades — is the proper imaginative foundation for Black-radical future-imagining." (Standard scholarly account of Afrofuturism)
Strong mystical-cosmological framework — Sun Ra's cosmic-philosophical mythology as musical-philosophical-religious work.
"Sun Ra's cosmic-philosophical mythology — Saturn-origin, Egyptian-Atlantean mythology, planetary-spiritual aliases — is musical-religious-philosophical practice, not metaphor." (Standard scholarly account)
Major Black-radical-musical text — alternative-cosmic identity as response to American racial conditions.
"The Atlantean-cosmic identity Sun Ra constructed is a Black-radical response to the American racial conditions he refused to be circumscribed by." (Standard scholarly account)
Strong aesthetic-musical-experimental framework — electronic-cosmic-jazz as aesthetic-philosophical practice.
"The Moog-electronic textures alongside the free-jazz Arkestra playing are aesthetic-philosophical statement about what musical work can be." (Atlantis, standard scholarly account)
Cosmic-philosophical-religious framework with strong pantheist-panentheist resonances.
"The cosmos as the proper musical-philosophical setting; the divine as the cosmic-musical totality." (Standard scholarly account)
Strong hermetic-esoteric-religious framework — Egyptian mystery-religious mythology integrated into Sun Ra's practice.
"The hermetic-Egyptian-mystery-religious tradition — Hermes Trismegistus, the Corpus Hermeticum — is one of the sources for Sun Ra's cosmic-mythology." (Standard scholarly account)
Anticipatory critical-theoretical work on race and modernity through musical-mythological practice.
"Sun Ra's practice as critical-theoretical alternative to assimilationist-respectability politics; the cosmic-Atlantean identity refuses American conventional racial categories." (Standard scholarly account)
Internal Tensions
Sun Ra's practice has been variously assessed — defenders see major Afrofuturist-mystical-musical-philosophical achievement, critics have at times reduced it to eccentricity; the Afrofuturist-academic recovery from the 1990s onward established its canonical status.
