Gaudium et Spes
Vatican II Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (1965)
Tradition: Vatican II Catholic theology
Vatican II's 1965 Gaudium et Spes — Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World
Gaudium et Spes ("Joy and Hope") is the Vatican II Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (1965) — central thesis: "the joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the people of this age... are the joys and hopes... of the followers of Christ"; the Church engages the modern world with hope rather than condemnation; the dignity of the human person, marriage and family, culture, economic-social life, political community, peace and the community of nations are central. The document was foundational for post-Vatican-II Catholic engagement with modernity.
