The Many Faces of Realism
Hilary Putnam's 1987 foundational text articulating "internal realism" / pragmatic pluralism
Tradition: American analytic philosophy
Putnam's 1987 articulation of "internal realism" / pragmatic pluralism between metaphysical realism and relativism
The Many Faces of Realism is Hilary Putnam's 1987 collection of his Carus Lectures — central thesis: a middle position between "metaphysical realism" (which he had earlier critiqued) and relativism is possible — "internal realism" or "pragmatic pluralism" that affirms objectivity within a conceptual scheme without claiming a "God's-eye" view of reality-in-itself. The work is the major short statement of Putnam's mature pragmatic-pluralist position.
