The Sign of Jonas (1953) is Thomas Merton's (1915-1968) monastic-journal covering 1946-1952 — the period spanning his solemn-vows profession (1947), his ordination as a Catholic priest (1949), and the intensifying decade-and-a-half of his mature monastic life at the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani (Kentucky) before the consequential 1960s-period turn toward inter-religious dialogue, social-political engagement, and reformulated solitary-hermit life. The Sign of Jonas is the sequel to Merton's bestselling autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain (1948), but its register is significantly different — instead of the conversion-narrative-arc structure of an autobiography, it offers daily and weekly journal-entries (selected by Merton from the much larger private journals later published in the seven-volume Journals series 1995-1998), recording the daily texture of contemplative life: liturgical-hour observance, work in the woods, study, doubts about his vocation, the question of whether the cenobitic Trappist life or a more eremitic life suits his contemplative temperament, the inner-life movements of consolation and desolation. The title alludes to Jonah in the whale — Merton sees himself, like Jonah, called against his will into the depths of contemplative interiority. The book is foundational for the post-war Anglophone Catholic-contemplative renewal and influenced a generation of Catholic-and-secular spiritual readers (including, importantly, secular intellectuals encountering Catholic-contemplative writing through Merton's literary register). The volume is the indispensable middle-period reference for understanding Merton's evolution between The Seven Storey Mountain and the later New Seeds of Contemplation (1961) and Zen-Christian dialogue works.
