Horkheimer's 1947 lectures on the historical decline of substantive reason
Eclipse of Reason is Horkheimer's 1947 lecture series at Columbia University — the central thesis is the historical eclipse of substantive (objective) reason by instrumental (subjective) reason. The book treats the rise of pragmatism, positivism, the revolt of nature, and the prospects for restoring critical thought. It is companion to Dialectic of Enlightenment and the major English-language statement of Horkheimer's position.
