Mulla Sadra's 'Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb' — late mystical-philosophical work on the keys to interpreting the Qur'an
A late work in Mulla Sadra's career, 'Mafātīḥ al-Ghayb' ('Keys to the Unseen') treats the philosophical-mystical foundations for interpreting the Qur'an. Sadra holds that the Qur'an has both an outer (ẓāhir) and inner (bāṭin) sense, that the inner sense is accessible through philosophical-mystical hermeneutic, and that the keys to this hermeneutic include his mature metaphysics of wujūd, his philosophical-psychology of the soul, and his eschatology. The work serves as both philosophical statement and as introduction to his major Qur'anic commentary (Tafsīr al-Qurʾān).
