Bonhoeffer's unfinished 1940-43 ethical magnum opus — Christian ethics for "responsible action"
Ethics (Ethik) is Bonhoeffer's unfinished ethical magnum opus — composed 1940-43 while he was engaged in the German anti-Nazi resistance and partially in prison; assembled and first published posthumously by Eberhard Bethge in 1949. Central themes: the "ultimate and penultimate", "responsible action" in this-worldly Christian ethics, the unity of reality in Christ, and "things as they really are". The work is the major systematic statement of Bonhoeffer's mature theological ethics.
