The Seven Storey Mountain is the spiritual autobiography of Thomas Merton — published in 1948 when he was 33, seven years after his entry into the Trappist monastery of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky. The book is in three parts, paralleling Augustine's Confessions: (1) Prisoner's Base — Merton's early life, his bohemian youth at Cambridge and Columbia, his intellectual searching; (2) The Children in the Marketplace — his conversion to Catholicism in 1938 and the years of seeking his vocation; (3) The Sleeping Volcano — his entry into the monastery in 1941 and his early monastic life. The book became a massive bestseller — Graham Greene called it "an autobiography with a pattern and meaning valid for all of us" — and is widely credited with bringing thousands of vocations into the Catholic Church and into monastic life in the post-war years. Merton's subsequent work (more than seventy books and many more journals and letters) develops in directions that the early Mountain anticipates without exhausting: contemplative spirituality, social engagement (civil rights, anti-war), inter-religious dialogue with Buddhism and Hinduism.
