On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason is Schopenhauer's 1813 doctoral dissertation, systematising the four kinds of reasons (logical, physical-causal, mathematical, moral-motivational) corresponding to four types of object (concepts, empirical objects, mathematical relations, the willing subject). The principle of sufficient reason has these four irreducible forms; previous philosophy had wrongly conflated them. The dissertation provides the epistemological-methodological foundation for The World as Will and Representation (1818). The 1847 revised second edition incorporates thirty years of reflection.
