Taylor's 2007 magnum opus on the historical transformation to a secular age
A Secular Age is Taylor's 2007 magnum opus — central thesis: "secular" in the modern sense means a condition in which religious belief is one option among others rather than the unquestioned default; the historical story tracing the move from 1500 (when not-believing was scarcely intelligible) to 2000 (when believing is one option among many) involves Reform, the rise of the "buffered self", the immanent frame, and the "nova effect". The work is one of the major late-modern engagements with secularization.
