Pope Francis's 2020 social encyclical — fraternity and social friendship in the post-pandemic world
Fratelli Tutti ("All Brothers and Sisters," 3 October 2020) is Pope Francis's major social encyclical, signed at the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi on the eve of his feast day. Composed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the document develops: the parable of the Good Samaritan as paradigm political-philosophical framework, the critique of contemporary nationalism and populism, the proper role of dialogue and friendship across religious and political divisions, the rejection of war and capital punishment.

School Embodiments
Major Catholic-magisterial social-doctrinal document.
"This new encyclical offers a contribution that — in the present pandemic — could serve to revive concern for the human family." (Fratelli Tutti, opening)
Major cosmopolitan-political-philosophical statement.
"For all our hyper-connectivity, we witnessed a fragmentation that made it more difficult to resolve problems that affect us all. Anyone who thinks that the only lesson to be learned was the need to improve what we were already doing... is denying reality." (Fratelli Tutti 7)
Continued Latin American liberation-theological influence — option for the poor and excluded.
"Every brother or sister in need, when abandoned or ignored by the society in which I live, becomes an existential foreigner, even though born in the same country." (Fratelli Tutti 97)
Strong religious-pacifist commitments — rejection of war as legitimate political instrument.
"Every war leaves our world worse than it was before. War is a failure of politics and of humanity." (Fratelli Tutti 261)
Critical-theoretical engagement with contemporary populism, nationalism, and economic conditions.
"Today's populist political-economic mechanisms isolate communities and erode trans-national solidarities; the Catholic-cosmopolitan vision opposes this." (Fratelli Tutti)
Continued strong commitments to economic-distributive justice.
"The right of all to integral development is the condition of any other right; its denial is the condition of all the other injustices." (Fratelli Tutti)
Strong inter-religious framework — the 2019 Abu Dhabi Document signed with Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayyeb as one source.
"This is a journey of fraternity which the religions are called to make together — the 2019 Document on Human Fraternity is the principal recent expression." (Fratelli Tutti)
Roman Catholic tradition.
