Palamas's 1338-41 Triads — foundational distinction between divine essence and uncreated energies
The Triads in Defense of the Holy Hesychasts is St. Gregory Palamas's 1338-41 defense of the hesychast monastic tradition against the criticism of Barlaam the Calabrian — central thesis: the distinction between the absolutely unknowable divine essence (ousia) and the participable uncreated energies (energeiai), through which humans encounter and are deified by God; the hesychast vision of the uncreated light is the experience of these uncreated energies. The Palamite distinction was synodally ratified in 1351 and is the foundational systematic-mystical doctrine of late Byzantine and modern Eastern Orthodox theology.
