Sula (1973) is Morrison's second novel, the story of the friendship of Sula Peace and Nel Wright in "the Bottom," the Black community of Medallion, Ohio, from 1919 to 1965. Sula and Nel grow up together, share a moment of childhood violence that haunts them, are separated by Sula's ten-year absence, reunite, and are alienated by Sula's sleeping with Nel's husband. Sula dies young; Nel realises, years later, that she has been mourning Sula, not her husband. National Book Award finalist.
