McCarthy's 1985 borderlands novel of nineteenth-century scalp-hunters and metaphysical violence
Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West is Cormac McCarthy's 1985 borderlands novel, drawing on the historical Glanton Gang of 1849-50 Mexican-American Indian scalp hunters. The Kid, a fourteen-year-old runaway from Tennessee, joins the gang in the Mexican-American borderlands, where the supernatural figure of Judge Holden — a hairless, seven-foot polymath who articulates a metaphysics of war as ultimate trade — presides over scenes of extreme violence. The novel's King-James-cadenced prose and refusal of moral consolation place it among the supreme achievements of late-twentieth-century American literature.
