Tradition: Classical Chinese Daoism
The 4th-c. BCE founding scripture of Daoism — Way and Power, wuwei, and the dao that cannot be named
The Daodejing (道德經, "Classic of the Way and Power") is the founding scripture of Daoism — traditionally attributed to Laozi (6th c. BCE) but compiled from multiple hands by the 4th c. BCE. Eighty-one short chapters in gnomic poetic-philosophical form develop: the Dao (Way) that cannot be named or spoken; the De (Power, Virtue) of accord with the Dao; wuwei (non-action, effortless action); the ziran (spontaneity, self-so) of Heaven and Earth; the political vision of the sage-ruler. Foundational for Chinese philosophy alongside the Confucian Analects; central to Chinese religion, aesthetics, medicine, and politics.
