Hurston's 1937 founding work of African American women's literature — Janie Crawford's search
Their Eyes Were Watching God is Zora Neale Hurston's 1937 founding work of African American women's literature, set in the all-Black town of Eatonville, Florida. Janie Crawford, after three marriages (the loveless old Logan Killicks; the ambitious mayor Joe Starks; the much-younger Tea Cake), survives a hurricane that destroys the Everglades and her happiness. Hurston's deep engagement with Black-Southern vernacular speech and her depiction of a Black woman's search for selfhood and love were undervalued in her lifetime but rediscovered (especially through Alice Walker's 1975 essay) and made central to African American literature.
