Benjamin's unfinished 1927-1940 'Das Passagen-Werk' — montage-historical materialist study of nineteenth-century Paris
Composed across thirteen years (1927-1940) and unfinished at Benjamin's September 1940 death by suicide at the Spanish border, 'Das Passagen-Werk' (The Arcades Project) is Benjamin's vast montage-historical-materialist study of nineteenth-century Paris as the capital of the nineteenth century. The work consists of thousands of quotations from primary sources — fashion magazines, urban planning documents, novels, encyclopaedias, photographs — organised under 36 thematic 'convolutes' (fashion, boredom, prostitution, gambling, Baudelaire, Haussmann, the Saint-Simonians, photography, etc.) interspersed with Benjamin's own commentary. Published posthumously by Suhrkamp in 1982 (English trans. Howard Eiland and Kevin McLaughlin 1999), it has reshaped twentieth-century cultural history.
