The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment
Lamrim Chenmo — Tsongkhapa's 1402 systematic exposition of the Mahāyāna path, founding text of the Gelug school
Tradition: Tibetan Gelug Buddhism
Tsongkhapa's 1402 great treatise on the stages of the path to enlightenment
The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lamrim Chenmo, ལམ་རིམ་ཆེན་མོ་) is Tsongkhapa's 1402 magnum opus in the lamrim ("stages of the path") genre. The work systematically articulates the Tibetan Buddhist path from initial human birth through the three vehicles (Hīnayāna, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna) to full Buddhahood, drawing on Atisha's Bodhipathapradīpa (1042) and the entire Indian Buddhist tradition. Foundational for the Gelug ("Yellow Hat") school of Tibetan Buddhism — the school of the Dalai Lamas — and one of the most important texts of Tibetan Buddhism overall.
