Sun Ra's 1974 Afrofuturist film and album — outer-space as Black liberation
Space Is the Place is Sun Ra's 1974 Afrofuturist film (directed by John Coney) and 1973 album by Sun Ra and the Intergalactic Solar Arkestra. Sun Ra (the bandleader-cosmic-philosopher Herman Poole Blount, who claimed Saturnian origin) arrives in 1972 Oakland to transport Black Americans to a new home on a planet in outer space, away from the oppressive American social order. Through the film and the cosmic-jazz music, Sun Ra articulates the Afrofuturist vision of outer-space as Black liberation. Foundational for Afrofuturism and the long Black-cosmic tradition.
