Edwards's 1737 account of the Northampton revival — founding work of evangelical revivalism
A Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God in the Conversion of Many Hundred Souls in Northampton is Jonathan Edwards's 1737 pastoral account of the revival that occurred in his Massachusetts congregation 1734-35. Edwards describes the patterns of conversion, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the moral-psychological signs of genuine awakening. Widely circulated in Britain and America (Edwards corresponded with John Wesley and George Whitefield), the work helped catalyse the First Great Awakening (c. 1730-55). Foundational for evangelical Protestantism, the modern theology of revival, and American religious history.
