Instruction on Certain Aspects of the "Theology of Liberation"
The 1984 CDF Instruction criticising Marxist-influenced liberation theology
Tradition: Late-twentieth-century Roman Catholic magisterium
The 1984 CDF Instruction (Libertatis Nuntius) — Vatican critique of Marxist liberation theology
Instruction on Certain Aspects of the "Theology of Liberation" (Libertatis Nuntius) is the 1984 instruction of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), issued under Prefect Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI). The Instruction criticises the Marxist-influenced strands of liberation theology — particularly the appropriation of Marxist class analysis and what the Vatican saw as a reduction of the gospel's liberation to a horizontal political programme. The text was followed by a more positive 1986 Instruction on Christian Freedom and Liberation. Foundational for the magisterial response to liberation theology and central to the Vatican-liberation-theology debate of the 1980s.
