Mach's 1895 'Popular Scientific Lectures' — accessible philosophy-of-science statement of empirio-critical doctrine
Published in 1895 as 'Populärwissenschaftliche Vorlesungen' and rapidly translated into English (1895, Open Court, Chicago), Mach's lectures gather his popularising accounts of mechanics, optics, electricity, the principle of comparison in physics, and the economy of scientific thought. The book is the most accessible mid-Mach statement of empirio-criticism — the view that scientific concepts (atoms, forces, absolute space and time) are abstract economical summaries of sensation, not metaphysical realities. Mach's influence on the Vienna Circle, on early Einstein, and on the wider critique of Newtonian absolutism flows in large part through these lectures.
