Tradition: German classical / Weimar classicism
Goethe's 1795-96 founding Bildungsroman — the formation of the modern self through experience
Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre) is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1795-96 novel, the founding work of the Bildungsroman — the novel of personal formation. Wilhelm Meister, the son of a bourgeois merchant, leaves home to pursue an artistic vocation with a theatrical troupe, encounters a sequence of formative experiences (the mysterious Mignon and her father the harper; the Tower Society; the beautiful Natalie), and gradually finds his place in a renewed social-economic world. Foundational for the German Bildungsroman tradition (Stifter, Keller, Mann, Hesse); shaped Hegel, Schlegel, and Romantic theory of culture.
