Maṇḍana's 'Bhāvanā-viveka' — Mīmāṃsā theory of bhāvanā (the action-producing meaning of the verb)
Composed c. 8th century, 'Bhāvanā-viveka' ('Discrimination of Bhāvanā') is Maṇḍana's treatise on the Mīmāṃsā concept of 'bhāvanā' — the action-producing element in the meaning of a verb. Within the Mīmāṃsā tradition's analysis of meaning, bhāvanā designates the productive-causal aspect by which the verb (especially the optative / imperative) generates an action; the analysis distinguishes 'śabdī bhāvanā' (the linguistic-injunctive impulse) from 'ārthī bhāvanā' (the agent-side productive aspect). The work is a focused Mīmāṃsā contribution to the philosophy of language and action.
